Wilson County approved a nonrecurring budget amendment totaling $345,000 to cover overtime and utilities through the end of the fiscal year. The director said $325,000 is for overtime and $20,000 is for utilities; he added that the majority of overtime costs will be reimbursed in connection with an ice storm but he could not confirm the reimbursement timing.
The director described an unusually high number of absences and vacancies driving overtime costs: "I have ... three midlevel vacancies on a shift" and multiple staff on extended leave across shifts, he said. Commissioners said the concentration of extended leaves (military deployments and other reasons) was unusual and pressed for clarification on coverage needs.
A commissioner moved to approve the amendment and another seconded; the chair called for the vote and the motion carried. The director said some overtime will be reimbursed but the county does not yet know when those funds will arrive.
Operational notes discussed after the vote included the expected return of a new fire truck from state-level activities and required specialized training before it enters service, and a commissioner thanked Melissa Seismore for coordinating debris pickup during recent storms.
