Committee accepts donated books, debates process for library purchases and religious content

The committee on March 3 accepted a donation of 16 copies of Chasing Embers by Glenn Beck for placement in appropriate secondary school libraries, subject to standard review and cataloging. The motion to accept the donation passed after brief discussion and an agreement to review placement suitability.

Separately, a member moved to authorize the purchase of 25 copies of Forge by Faith by William Wells, a local author and mentor, for district library placement subject to catalog and review procedures. The committee approved the authorization motion and then voted to refer financing and logistics for any purchase to the finance committee.

Several members raised procedural concerns about how books are selected for district libraries and whether religiously themed titles belong on shelves used by students. One committee member said she wanted to be sure purchases do not "separate religion and school," while another described past personal attacks accusing them of being a "book burner" and said the donation effort was partly a response to that criticism.

Committee members generally agreed that donated materials and proposed purchases should follow a fair review process before final placement. The finance subcommittee will consider funding logistics for any authorized purchases and district staff will perform standard content review and cataloging for donated copies before they are added to school collections.
