On Thursday, May 15, Mayor Rodriguez met with Cub Scout Webelos in Balcones Heights to discuss the role of local government and encourage young people to consider public service. Firefighters and police officers also attended to demonstrate emergency equipment and answer questions.
The mayor explained the responsibilities of the mayor’s office and urged the scouts “to always follow your dreams and accomplish your goals.” Firefighters showed tools from a fire truck and allowed the scouts to sit in a real firetruck; officers opened a police cruiser to explain the equipment used to serve and protect the community.
The Webelos were also brought into the council chamber, where they took on council roles and staged a mock city council meeting to learn about local civic processes. A staff member leading the activity asked scouts to indicate their votes during the exercise: “So, ma’am, how do you vote?” to which the scout replied, “Yes.” The transcript records five affirmative votes during the ceremonial session. Sarah Grayson, a meeting participant identified in the transcript, was among those who voted yes.
The event was framed as an educational, hands-on introduction to municipal government and public safety roles rather than a formal council action. Mayor Rodriguez and city staff described the visit as an effort to welcome and inspire “the young leaders of the future.”
No formal motions or city decisions were taken as part of the career day; the vote was a ceremonial exercise for the scouts’ learning experience.
