District leaders told the board on Feb. 23 that a new, accelerated strategic‑planning process will begin in late March with JMP Consulting facilitator Dr. Joe Porto leading a set of stakeholder sessions and a four‑meeting committee process in April.
Dr. Porto described the scope: a three‑year strategic plan serving as a district improvement blueprint that complements — but does not replace — the long‑standing Portrait of a Graduate. The process will start with a district survey to establish a current‑reality baseline, followed by a day of stakeholder interviews on March 31. A representative committee of roughly 35–40 people (including trustees, administrators, teachers, staff, students and community members) will meet four consecutive Thursdays in April (proposed dates: April 16, 23, 30 and a May 7 wrap‑up) to develop lean mission/belief statements, concrete three‑year goals and measurable indicators of “greatness.”
Trustees asked questions about the timeline, board involvement, and how the plan will produce measurable outcomes. Some trustees urged caution about using the plan as a marketing success story too early, saying it would be better to wait for measurable outcomes before public presentations at statewide conferences. Others said the process itself — and what the district learns from it — could be useful for responding to public comments and for setting accountability targets for staffing and equity.
What’s next: Dr. Porto will begin stakeholder interviews March 31, and the representative committee will convene in April; the plan will emphasize concise mission/belief statements, specific goals by theme (teaching and learning; student life; finance/facilities; community outreach) and a final accountability segment that defines indicators and measurement strategies.
