Murals That Bridge project design nearly complete; crowdfunding planned

The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission was told March 4 that Phase 2 of the Murals That Bridge project is moving forward this spring, with fundraising nearly complete and designs close to public release.
Commission staff said the Huron Street restoration in 2024 provided a proof of concept and that the current phase will target the Main Street underpass as a similar gateway to Ann Arbor. "We have almost fully raised all of the money. The design is almost complete," one presenter said, adding that the commission will launch a crowdfunding campaign to let community members contribute at a range of donation levels once the public design is available.
Commissioners noted that several approvals and permits remain part of the process, including review by relevant transportation or public-works agencies. Staff said they expect the project to move forward in 2026 but that final schedules depend on those reviews and completing design work for public viewing.
The commission discussed coordinating outreach and noted interest in connecting the project with other city-led public-input efforts on North Main. Staff agreed to investigate whether city sidewalk signs and other surveys relate to the mural plans and to share any updates at a future meeting.
