Sunset Beach public works seeks $250k beach compactor, backhoe and new maintenance staff

Public works outlined equipment purchases, maintenance staffing increases and operating details during a budget workshop April 11.

Matt (public works lead) described a proposed beach trash compactor ("load pack") priced around $250,000; vendor information indicated a 6‑month delivery window so the unit would not arrive for the coming beach season if ordered immediately. Vendor maintenance estimates ranged from minimal preventive work to an expected three service calls per year (~$5,200 annually for three calls) to achieve a longer service life (10–18 years with regular maintenance).

Council and staff also discussed replacing a 2013 backhoe (residual value estimated at $5–10k) and reducing reliance on distant service providers by buying locally supported equipment. To reduce recurring subcontracted custodial costs (currently ~$45–50k), public works requested two full‑time positions (custodian and facility maintenance lead) plus two part‑time weekend positions (estimated $40k) to improve daily facility coverage and reduce reactive call‑backs.

Staff said some capital and operating costs could be partially offset by selling surplus equipment and by reassigning fees collected for specific services (for example, inspection and parking assignment rules). Council asked for more precise maintenance‑program pricing and warranty details before making a final decision; several members emphasized the need to compare leasing vs. purchasing and contractor options.

Next steps: staff will supply warranty and maintenance‑program quotes, residual value estimates for trade‑in or sale, and clearer projected savings from reduced subcontracting to inform the next budget session.
