Panel discusses lake maintenance, Stillwater reports and NCDEQ work plan for perimeter weeds

Committee members reviewed monthly activity reports from Stillwater and said current treatments show the lakes are in good condition heading into summer. "We do have reports of monthly maintenance of the lakes from Dustin and it looks good," a committee member said reading the contractor updates.
Kathy Trent read a subcommittee update from Jennifer Dole noting the division of water resources grant info sheet was provided to the lakes subgroup for input and review. Members reported that the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) approved the town’s work plan; once the town submits an official request, NCDEQ staff are expected to assist with addressing high perimeter and other noxious weeds, possibly in June–July. The committee clarified that the NCDEQ assistance is targeted to weeds rather than direct algae remediation.
The group also discussed an algae specialist’s recommendation that planting native vegetation at lake perimeters can deter elements that contribute to algae growth. Jennifer Dole’s update said she had contacted local partners, including a possible algae study tour with Miss Taylor and Mr. Brocker and follow-up with Miss Mitchell, and mentioned potential internship opportunities tied to those efforts.
Committee members directed staff and the ponds-and-lakes subcommittee to continue coordinating with NCDEQ, refine the town’s request for assistance, and bring additional data and scheduling details to the next committee meeting.
