Council approves first reading to establish Moreno Valley veterans commission

The Moreno Valley City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance on March 3 to create a veterans commission designed to advise the city on veterans’ needs and services.
City Manager Brian Mohan told the council the draft ordinance mirrors the senior citizens commission with two modifications: it would create five members rather than nine and set two-year terms instead of three. Mohan said the council had previously directed staff to draft the ordinance and that if the council approved tonight, a second reading would follow at the next meeting.
There was limited public comment on the item. Luis Palomares expressed support for the idea, noting the community’s large veteran population. A member of council thanked residents who brought the idea forward and recognized Council Member Delgado and Mayor Prom Gonzalez for their work developing the proposal.
Councilmember moved and seconded staff's recommendation; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with Council member Bernard, Council member Baka Santa Cruz, Mayor Prom Gonzalez and Mayor Cabera voting yes.
The ordinance will return for a second reading at the next council meeting, at which point the council may adopt final language, set an effective date and confirm details related to appointment processes and reporting requirements.
