At the March 2, 2026 Person County Board of Commissioners meeting the board approved the appointment of Lauren Horic to fill the remaining term as register of deeds and Clerk Debbie Barker administered the oath of office to Horic and two deputy registers.
Chair Perier announced the Person County Democrats had nominated Lauren Horic to fill the vacancy. The board moved to approve the appointment and, after a voice vote, the chair declared the appointment approved. Debbie Barker then swore in Horic, Carrie Clayton and Jennifer Patterson. After the oath, Horic thanked the board and staff and referenced the late Tanya Wilson, saying the office would "endeavor to uphold her legacy of compassion, integrity, and being the real historical recorder of the documents of Person County."
Commissioners applauded the newly sworn register and deputies. The action restored continuity in the Register of Deeds office and was handled by voice vote; the transcript does not record a roll-call tally or show any dissenting votes.
The board also approved a motion to amend the schedule to hold an upcoming meeting in the auditorium (the change was moved and approved by voice vote) and later adjourned the meeting.
