A district administrator presented the Manitowoc School District’s timeline and job description for a new athletic director, saying the district is in phase one of recruitment and will hold first-round interviews on March 25.
The presenter said a small screening team will review application packets and move candidates forward based on prior experience, coaching background and answers to structured questions about strategic leadership, fiscal and legal stewardship, holistic student‑athlete development, personnel management and community relations. "We're right now we're in phase one where we're collecting applications... we're looking at having our first round of interviews on March 25," the presenter said.
Board members pressed for more detail on compensation and leveling. The presenter said the athletic director will be placed on the district’s administrative scale (a 260‑day contract for administrators) and that a precise pay range depends on the candidate’s experience; the range will be provided to board members on request. One member asked why the posting describes a "competitive salary and benefit package" instead of listing a range; the presenter said the salary varies by administrative level and experience.
Several trustees questioned the job description’s wording, including the phrase "state level of excellence," and said it risks sounding vague. A member characterized the phrase as "jargony" and another said applicants typically list concrete achievements—state championships, regional finals—on their resumes.
Members also asked whether the athletic director would report to a principal or to district offices. The presenter said the position reports to the building principal for day‑to‑day matters but will work collaboratively with principals at elementary, middle and high school levels; the district intends to update job descriptions to make that districtwide responsibility clearer.
Trustees emphasized that the role should value activities (prom, musical, forensics) as well as athletics; the presenter confirmed the posting is titled "athletics and activities" and that application questions will address extracurricular inclusivity and Title IX/equity concerns.
The item was presented for information only and required no board action at the meeting. The board accepted the update and moved on to the next agenda item.
