The Canyons School District board voted Tuesday to adopt its final budget for the 2023–24 fiscal year, to approve a tentative budget for 2024–25 and to set a Truth in Taxation hearing for Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. to consider property tax rates.
Leon Wilcox, presenting the district finances, summarized revenue increases (higher property valuations, higher interest and unspent carryovers) and higher projected expenses mainly tied to personnel and insurance claims. He said the district expects to close the current year a few percentage points under the adopted budget and to maintain a multi‑million-dollar fund balance for stability.
Wilcox said trustees were being asked to consider raising the board‑voted levies to yield an additional $5 million for operations (to fund compensation and services) and $4 million for capital (to cover lease revenue bond payments for projects). "That would generate roughly $9 million above the certified rate," he said, and gave a sample calculation that under the current valuation assumptions an "average" homeowner would see about a $94 increase in the portion of tax attributable to the district's certified rate change.
Trustees discussed capital projects funded by recent bond issues — including field and facility work at multiple high schools — and the district's long‑range capital outlay. Wilcox highlighted a $55 million capital-outlay plan for next year that covers stadium tracks, roofing and other building repairs tied to bond proceeds.
There was no public comment during the budget hearing portion of the meeting. The board then approved the final 2023–24 budget and the tentative 2024–25 budget by motion. The board also authorized staff to publish required notices and to hold the truth‑in‑taxation hearing on Aug. 6.
What happens next: The district will publish the statutorily required notices and hold the tax‑rate public hearing on Aug. 6 at 6 p.m.; any final property‑tax rates would be adopted after that hearing.
