Leominster council approves routine appointments and appropriations, defers several petitions
Summary
At its Feb. 25 meeting the council approved school building committee appointments, referred several mayoral appropriation requests to committee, granted or deferred several business-license renewals, and deferred petitions on municipal aggregation and a National Grid pole pending further coordination.
In addition to land-use hearings and the planning-board nomination, the Leominster City Council handled a set of routine actions and referrals during its Feb. 25 session.
Appointments and appropriations: The council gave unanimous committee recommendation to grant C-44, appointing Suzanne Kohler and Sandra Cuchier to the school building committee for the new Fbrook Elementary School. Several mayoral appropriation requests (C46–C52) were referred to the appropriate committees for review; specific appropriation amounts included $10,000 to building expense (C46), $50,000 to the city solicitor expense account (C51) and smaller transfers for veteran and scholarship funds.
Contracts, licenses and renewals: Purchasing agent Gregory (presented at the meeting) sought authority to award a five-year school-busing contract beginning July 1, 2026; that petition was referred to the chair for further vetting. Several secondhand-dealer license renewals (33-26, 34-26, 35-26) received positive recommendations from the police and treasurer and were granted or deferred for administrative corrections (for example, an application filed under a council member's name required a different signer).
Other items: The municipal aggregation petition to explore electricity-aggregation contracting (30-26) and a utility pole/push-brace petition from National Grid/Verizon (27-26) were deferred for subcommittee coordination and follow-up because of scheduling and utility outreach issues. Councilors also noted community events and volunteer opportunities including an early-March forum on speeding and a Rotary meal-pack volunteer day.
Next steps: Referred appropriations and appointments will return to committee with recommendations; license applicants were instructed to correct administrative issues; deferred petitions will be revisited after subcommittee meetings and follow-up with utilities or petitioners.
