Longtime Olentangy board member Kevin G. O’Brien resigns; board outlines 10–30 day appointment window

The Olentangy Local Schools Board of Education on Feb. 26 accepted a letter from Kevin G. O’Brien announcing his immediate resignation after 17 years on the board.

Board President read O’Brien’s letter into the record, quoting his statement that he was “submitting my resignation from the Olentangy Local Schools Board of Education effective immediately” and thanking the community for the opportunity to serve. Board members praised O’Brien’s long service, noting his institutional knowledge and work on district finance and capital projects.

The board reviewed the statutory steps for filling the vacancy under the Ohio Revised Code. Board leaders said the board may begin the appointment process immediately but cannot appoint until 10 days after official notification and must fill the seat within 30 days. The board announced it will open an application window (about two weeks), require a resume and cover letter, interview selected candidates, and aim to appoint a replacement on or before March 28, 2026. The appointed member will serve the remainder of O’Brien’s term, through Dec. 31, 2027.

Board President and Superintendent Mr. Meyer urged qualified community members to apply, saying the board will look for candidates with relevant experience and a commitment to student success. The board emphasized that the appointment is a short but serious commitment and encouraged applicants who might also run in the next election cycle.

The board did not take further substantive action on the vacancy at the Feb. 26 meeting. Next steps include posting the application materials and scheduling candidate interviews before the March appointment deadline.
