Board hears legislative update: Ten Commandments signs to be received; Gator program funding appears unchanged

Dr. Bud Cloutier, speaking during the legislative update at the March 3 board meeting, told members the Ten Commandments signs issue that had been on hold because of a lawsuit is now moving forward. "We had put on hold because of the lawsuit that was held against them. The governor's request has been upheld... the objection to it was cast down," Cloutier said, and added the signs had been delivered under the legislation that specifies size requirements for the signs.
A board member asked whether the signs would come from the state or be locally produced; Cloutier said the signs had already been delivered to the district and staff agreed a sample could be brought to the next committee or board meeting for review.
Cloutier also reported on the Gator program, saying the governor had requested a doubling of funds but the Senate president rejected that request and "as it stands, it doesn't look like there's going to be any more funds allocated to that currently." He cautioned that future action in session could change funding but said the near-term outlook was for no increase.
The board did not take any formal action on these items at the meeting; members asked for samples and clarification at a future meeting.
