Longmont council picks top retreat topics, chooses outside-led team-building session

At its Dec. 2, 2008 study session, the Longmont City Council reviewed a ranked list of potential retreat topics and selected a focused agenda for an upcoming council retreat. Councilors emphasized keeping the retreat concise and actionable, with interest in Main Street revitalization, regional transit and economic-development issues, affordable-housing follow-up and environmental sustainability.
Valerie Skid summarized staff’s suggested structure and explained options for team-building exercises. After discussion, council members voted to proceed with option two for team building: a short Friday session will be dropped and the retreat will include a two-hour Saturday morning session led by an outside consultant (focused on DISC-style behavioral training). Council Member Tom McCoy moved for the outside-led Saturday session; the motion passed.
Council members also discussed adding affordable housing material and involving the Human Services or Housing Authority for a later study session. Members asked staff to consider inviting regional experts (for example, representatives from governor-level task forces or regional transit planners) when addressing transit and Main Street topics. The council asked staff to bring a final retreat agenda and any speaker recommendations back for confirmation.
