Franklin County road superintendent reports storm cleanup, leaf pickup; court approves garage outfitting funds

Road Superintendent Duke Wilber updated the Fiscal Court on Oct. 16 about recent operations and the new road facility’s final outfitting needs.
Wilber said crews have been running the grapple and chipper after a windstorm and are largely caught up: "we finally got pretty well caught up on that." He announced the start of leaf pickup (east side Mondays/Wednesdays, west side Thursdays/Fridays) through Dec. 19, receipt of new F‑550 trucks and delivery of about 1,500 tons of salt.
The court authorized staff to advertise for sealed bids to outfit two new chassis with dump beds, plows, spreaders and lighting; the packet estimated roughly $45,000 per truck and $90,000 in total appropriated for the outfitting line.
Magistrates also discussed a request to authorize up to $225,000 for equipment, tools and infrastructure needed to make the new road garage fully operational — including a natural‑gas generator intended to supply critical systems. The motion passed at the voting session.
Magistrates asked for specifications and timely bidding procedures for items such as shelving, windows and a used forklift; officials said many items will be competitively bid and that the project’s encumbrances are in fund 97.
