Special School District of St. Louis County board votes to hold closed meeting on litigation and personnel matters

President Meeks, president of the Special School District of St. Louis County Board of Education, asked the board for a motion to hold a closed meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 9 to discuss legal actions and privileged communications with attorneys and personnel matters, including hiring, firing, disciplining or promoting employees and identifiable personnel records.

The board conducted a roll call to establish a quorum; Vice President Kuno, Director Nelson, Director Storius, Director Suda and Director Beaver all confirmed their presence. After President Meeks moved to hold the closed meeting and a member seconded, the board voted by roll call and the motion carried with all members voting yes.

"I now ask for a motion to hold a closed meeting of the board of education on Tuesday, September 9th, regarding legal actions, causes of actions or litigations involving the district and any confidential or privileged communication between the district and its representatives and its attorneys," President Meeks said when introducing the motion.

Board members did not discuss the substance of the anticipated closed-session topics on the public record beyond the categories listed in the motion. The public portion of the meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn the open session; members agreed to remain on the same virtual link for the closed session that followed.

No statutes or ordinance citations were read into the record and the board did not name specific cases, employees or personnel files during the public portion. The motion and roll-call vote to convene the closed session were the meeting’s only recorded actions.
