The Mount Clemens City Commission voted to raise the residential refuse charge from $140 to $181 per unit and ordered the increase applied to the 2023 summer tax bill.
City staff told the commission the city’s refuse fee had not increased since 2011 and that recent contract and disposal cost increases would otherwise create a projected FY2023 shortfall of about $104,000. Staff said roughly 82% of the charge covers hauler fees while about 18% covers city administrative costs. The commission approved the resolution by roll call (all members recorded in the transcript voting yes).
Commissioners did not request amendments to the resolution but asked for annual evaluations of the rate. The staff presentation said the rate will be reviewed each year "to determine if we need a raise, decrease or remain the same." No higher-level budget ordinance or multi-year plan was adopted at the meeting.
The increase is intended to cover immediate operating shortfalls tied to the city's refuse contract and disposal tonnage variability; further adjustments will be set by future budget decisions.
The commission concluded the item without further public comment and proceeded to the next agenda item.
