Mount Clemens approves agreement to buy replacement fire engine for aging Engine One

The Mount Clemens City Commission voted to enter an agreement with Sutfin Fire Apparatus to purchase a new fire engine to replace Engine One, which city staff said is more than 22 years old.
Acting City Manager Mr. Tingley told the commission the city will receive a $500,000 state allocation to apply toward the purchase and that the remaining balance would come from the city’s general fund or could be financed over seven to 10 years. He said committee work on specifications included input from the DPW director, the fire chief and the mechanics who service city vehicles to prioritize manufacturer reputation, parts availability and proximity of service centers.
Mr. Tingley said the lead time for delivery is anticipated to be about three years and that staff took into account pandemic-related supply-chain pressures and rising raw-material and labor costs when preparing the specifications. He also said the manufacturer under consideration, Sutfin Fire Apparatus, participates in Sourcewell cooperative purchasing, which satisfied the city’s procurement requirements.
Commissioners noted the sharp rise in apparatus costs since earlier appropriations and said they have asked state representatives to seek additional funding where possible. The commission approved the agreement by roll call vote; staff said the city attorney will review the contract and the final financing decision will be made as the delivery date approaches.
