Wyoming County board approves contracts for secured school entrances and Westside practice facility

The Wyoming County Board of Education approved awarding construction contracts for secure entry installations at multiple schools and accepted the low bid for a new Westside practice facility.
Staff presented bid-opening documents and McKinley’s recommendation letters for two separate construction efforts: secure entrances at three schools and a separate Westside practice facility. For the secured entrances, staff recommended SQP Construction Group as the lowest responsive bidder. The board was told the three sites covered by the secured-entrance project are Oenna Middle School, Pineville Middle School and Bville Elementary.
On the Westside practice facility, three contractors submitted bids and the low bidder was recommended for award; staff reported the practice-facility bid came in about $400,000 under the project estimate, which helped offset an over-estimate for the secured-entrance work and left net funds available for other projects.
Board members asked questions about bidder proximity, warranty/maintenance for out-of-area vendors, and opportunities for vocational-student involvement in bond projects; staff said subcontractor approvals will apply and that trades students may have opportunities to observe or participate under contractor supervision.
Motions to approve the recommended awards were made and passed by voice vote. Staff said the district will proceed with contracts and continue project coordination with McKinley’s project manager and the newly assigned Christian Rivera as overall project manager for upcoming projects.
Next steps include contractor onboarding, coordination of required site utilities (fire-hydrant flow tests) and sequencing to meet school‑opening timelines.
