Berkshire Elementary fourth-grade student council presents projects, says they collected more than 1,000 books

Eleven fourth-grade members of Berkshire Elementary School’s student council addressed the Berkshire Local Board of Education to summarize their work and plans.
Principal Mrs. Gil introduced the students and praised teacher Mrs. Star for organizing the leadership opportunity. Students described an application and interview process overseen by Mrs. Gil, Mrs. Star and Mrs. Parente. The student presenters said the council has 18 members overall, meets weekly at lunch and has led projects that include a books-for-donation drive that collected "over 1,000 books" in three weeks, cards for disabled veterans and monthly recess maintenance such as pumping balls.
Student Preston Gerick, Eva Wayne, Rory Wells and classmates each introduced themselves at the microphone. One student said the council’s mission is "to provide leadership and service to our students, staff, and community." The principal and board members praised the students’ initiative and noted plans for a future fundraiser to buy more playground equipment.
The presentation concluded with applause. The board thanked the students and noted they were welcome to stay for the meeting or leave.
