The Coffee County Policy and Procedures Committee voted March 9 to approve revisions to the county's sick leave policy and directed staff to forward the finalized document to the legislative committee for placement on a future full-commission agenda. The committee discussed and approved two primary changes: adding language that frames sick leave as a "benefit and a privilege and not a right," and shortening the clause under "doctor's certificate" so it ends at "after three consecutive days," allowing department heads to require a note after three straight days of absence.
The changes were presented and discussed at the committee's 5 p.m. meeting in Conference Room 1. A committee member moved to adopt the revisions and a second was recorded; the chair opened the item for discussion. No public comments were recorded. Committee members said the added sentence aims to soften prior wording while preserving the county's ability to address patterns of excessive leave. One member summarized the proposed insertion as a clearer way to distinguish sick leave from vacation for new employees.
Members also debated the appropriate scope of the doctor's note requirement. Under the approved wording, the policy will state that the department head "may require a doctor's certificate after three consecutive days." Supporters said that narrower, simpler language gives elected officials and department heads discretion to request proof of illness without presuming abuse in every absence; others observed that managers are best placed to judge whether leave is being misused.
After discussion the committee voted by voice to approve the revisions with no recorded opposition. Committee members signed the revised policy and asked staff member Heather to send it to Frank at the legislative committee for review and scheduling on a full-commission agenda. The committee also set its next meeting for May 18 at 5:00 p.m.
The meeting opened with routine business including roll call and approval of the agenda and previous minutes; it adjourned following the vote on the policy revisions.
