Board hears safety-plan update and superintendent highlights major donations; members press for PBIS teacher survey

Roanoke County School Board — At its meeting the Roanoke County School Board received an update on school safety plans, heard the superintendent's report on staffing and donations, and fielded multiple board-member reports focused on classroom supports.

Miss Tammy Nukem told the board that "all 27 schools and AEP have completed and submitted their safety emergency response plans," that the clerk has a digital copy for the board, and that the Ren County Police Department completed safety audits shared with each school administration. Nukem asked the board to approve the plans at the next meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Nicely reported a smooth start to the school year, saying teaching and bus-driver positions were largely filled and nutrition staffing was nearly complete. He highlighted two corporate contributions: Alro Steel donated more than $200,000 for welding and motorsports programs at the RCCTC, and Southern Team Auto and Subaru contributed over $10,000 for classroom use at Burlington Elementary. Nicely also promoted upcoming family engagement events, including district Title I meetings that will address smartphone and social-media safety.

Board members used their reports to raise operational concerns and requests for follow-up. One board member asked central-office staff for an anonymous, grade-level teacher survey on PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) and discipline, saying classroom behavior and special-education supports remain urgent priorities. The member stated the goal was to gather candid feedback before proposing changes and to ensure supports for teachers in classrooms that are struggling.

Members also thanked maintenance teams for addressing an HVAC failure at Glenver High School that threatened opening-day operations; officials reported repairs and overtime work by facilities staff. Board members praised community partners and volunteers, and a member publicly commended a school-resource officer for building positive relationships with students.

The board adopted a resolution to nominate three local media representatives to the VSBA Media Honor Roll (a formal motion presented by Mr. Chuck Limeberger), and approved routine consent items. There were no citizen comments on agenda items.

What happens next: The clerk will provide the board with the digital safety-plan packet for review; the board scheduled formal approval of those plans at a future meeting.
