Methuen schools accept OpenSciEd grant to expand middle-school science curriculum

The Methuen School Committee voted April 13 to accept an OpenSciEd grant that will fund professional development and classroom materials for grades 6–8 over a three-year period.
Superintendent Dr. Golobski told the committee the grant covers a four-day launch professional-development experience, follow-up workshops and durable materials for all units in the OpenSciEd curriculum. “OpenSciEd is a science program for our students in grades 6 through 8,” the superintendent said, explaining that the curriculum is open source but durable materials and teacher PD are the cost drivers.
The Marsh Grammar School and Timony had participated previously; the grant will extend access to the district’s remaining grammar schools and support lead-teacher and administrator development. The district identified vendors to provide consumable and durable materials at favorable costs.
Committee members asked for clarification that cafeteria-refresh funds referenced elsewhere were district food-service funds (not grant money) and recommended involving students in design decisions where physical spaces are refreshed with café funds.
The grant acceptance was approved by voice vote; staff will schedule the PD launch and coordinate materials procurement.
