Student-led green team plans townwide litter cleanup; Environmental Day moved to May 3

A Northern Highlands student who identified herself as Kathy Bum presented a plan during public comment for a townwide litter cleanup to coincide with the borough’s Environmental Day, which was moved to May 3.
"I first learned about the green team when I contacted Mark about trying to create some initiative to help out the litter in our town," Bum said. She described focusing volunteers on Crestwood, the brook behind Acme and other litter hotspots, and said roughly seven volunteers were already interested. She proposed collaborating with the Northern Highlands environmental club and athletic teams.
Council members and staff expressed support and offered logistical help. Meeting participants also clarified event logistics: an EPS (polystyrene) collection will be held in coordination with neighboring municipalities and will be processed in Ramsey at the train station, with collection scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on the announced weekend.
Council members agreed to place a resolution on a future agenda to authorize the borough’s role in hosting and to support any related grant applications that require an early submission.
The council did not take final action at this meeting but asked staff to prepare a resolution for the event and a grant resolution to be considered before the March deadline referenced during the discussion.
