North Brunswick students describe Model UN, German and Spanish exchange programs

Students and advisers at the North Brunswick Township Board of Education meeting on April 24 presented on three international programs: the high school Model United Nations trip, a 24‑year German sister‑school exchange, and a Spanish exchange that will host visiting students in October.
Kisha Gani, who identified herself as the Model United Nations club treasurer, described travel to Berlin and Prague where students visited historic sites and participated in committee debates with hundreds of international delegates. “This trip was a truly enriching experience,” Gani said, thanking the board for approving the travel.
An Shadid, the club president, recounted organizing the district’s Model UN conference in March, which drew more than 150 delegates and simulated topics from the Korean War to ethical deployment of autonomous weapons. Advisor Ben Sch (co‑advisor) and other staff highlighted student leadership in preparing background guides, committee work and event logistics.
Janice Mahalik, the German exchange co‑advisor, described a 24‑year partnership with a sister high school in Germany and a three‑week immersion program for students who lived with host families. Students Leni Ven Wan and Abby Asner said the exchange exposed them to local schools, historic sites and cultural traditions and created lasting friendships.
Spanish program presenters Mia Montero and Isabella Warez reviewed a 12‑day exchange in Spain, visits to Toledo and Madrid (including the Royal Palace) and immersive classroom experiences. The presenters said the Spanish counterparts will visit North Brunswick for 12 days this October and that teachers and chaperones are preparing to host them.
Board members praised the presentations and noted that these international experiences expand language skills and cultural understanding. The board indicated it looks forward to the visiting Spanish students in the fall and thanked the students and advisors for their work.
