Representatives of American Legion Post 72 presented a proposal Jan. 25 to display veterans’ and first-responder banners on town light poles as part of a "Hometown Heroes" program.
Palmer, the post commander, described the banners (18-by-36 vinyl with name, photo and service branch) and proposed starting with five banners and brackets. He provided a cost estimate to the board (including a $100 processing fee) and suggested the post or sponsors could fund production and assist with installation. Palmer recommended that an executive committee from the post help develop selection criteria and bring names to the town for final approval.
Board members asked about insurance, public-works installation and scheduling (rotation around holidays such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day and July 4). Staff advised the board that the town would need to review insurance and safety requirements for attachments to light poles and could instead allow sponsors to install and insure their banners. The board agreed to take the proposal under consideration and discuss it further at an upcoming work session.
