Worth County supervisors announced during their regular meeting that the county will not renew the 28E intergovernmental agreement providing law-enforcement coverage to the City of Northwood when it expires June 30.
Board members said they had discussed the issue at multiple meetings and decided against renewal. Staff said the county will formally notify Northwood’s mayor and include the 28E agreement documentation with the letter so the city may complete transition planning. The board estimated the city would have about four months to reinstitute its own police coverage and take back or otherwise acquire four deputies currently assigned under the agreement.
Members also raised practical transition questions about county-owned equipment in squad cars and records or items stored at city facilities. Staff said the county would inventory equipment and coordinate removal or sale if the city wished to purchase county-owned items.
County legal staff told the board there was no formal action required to allow the 28E to lapse, but supervisors directed staff to prepare the notification and to place any follow-up items on a future agenda if needed.
What happens next: staff will send a formal letter to Northwood’s mayor, confirm which vehicles and equipment belong to the county, and report back to the board so the city can complete staffing, equipment and record-transfer steps before June 30.
