The Sand Springs School Board opened its March 9 meeting by recognizing students and staff for recent achievements.
Mrs. Derky presented the Sandite Spirit Awards to members of the Sandite BMX team, praising their “exceptional dedication, grit, and heart” after a season that included multiple state championships, two Gold Cup titles and national competition. Laura Vanrice nominated the team, and Mrs. Derky told the board the riders "train twice a week" and represent a wide range of ages, from pre-K to high school seniors.
Coach Danny Scott received the Pace Setter Award for volunteering and mentoring athletes across age groups. The nomination cited his long hours and positive influence on riders.
The board also recognized Blake, a district cover bus driver, for intervening when an agitated man attempted to board a bus. The nomination quoted Blake as saying, “Not on this bus, you’re not. Thank you.” The district praised transportation staff for supporting students and recovering a stolen collectible hat after Emily Marshall investigated and provided information that led to its return; Shelley Sanders submitted the hat-recovery nomination.
The awards portion concluded and the meeting proceeded to superintendent reports and the consent agenda.
