Friendswood proclaims March 2 'Westwood Elementary Day,' students serve as council for a day

Mayor Blake Harris on March 2 proclaimed March 2, 2026, as Westwood Elementary Day and presided over a ceremonial "Council for a Day" event that invited second-graders and a sixth-grader to the dais.
The mayor said the event, which began in 2018 (paused one year for COVID), is intended to teach children civic processes, underscore that council members serve as volunteers and support the Friendswood Independent School District's character-education program. "We wanted these young people to learn how government works...we're all volunteers. So we're all doing this to give back to our city where we live," the mayor said.
City Secretary Adeline Spence read the proposed proclamation and the students recited Westwood Elementary's pledge: "At Westwood Elementary, we pledge to be kids with character...we will be honest, reliable, and worthy of trust." Council member Mockford moved to adopt the proclamation and Council member Lewis seconded the motion. The council voted 7–0 to approve it.
The proclamation will be used as an educational occasion; students received recognition from the council and were dismissed to a reception in the foyer. With no further business on the ceremonial agenda, the council adjourned the "Council for a Day" portion of the meeting.
