Commission reviews conference finances, approves work plan and awards scholarships

Commission staff reported on the recent supervisors’ conference finances, discussed possible changes to conference length and supervisor training, approved the annual work plan with a Sept. 15 start time set for the commission meeting, and reviewed scholarship awards.

Gary summarized the conference: "We had 171 attendees which is 15 more than last year" and reported $52,195 in revenue, higher food and hospitality costs than the prior year, and net revenue compared with prior years. He said the next conference is planned for Aberdine at the Ramkota on Feb. 24–26, with room blocks and state-rate rooms confirmed.

Commissioners discussed whether to shorten the supervisors' training or restructure the conference to two days because some counties had sent only two representatives due to registration costs and travel logistics. Several members said supervisor training remains valuable for grant eligibility and that any change would have to accommodate district meetings and association business.

On scholarships, Gary reported 35 on-time applications and eight late submissions that were not considered; the commission awarded eight scholarships (two $1,000 and six $500) using scholarship-fund interest. Members discussed improving outreach (QR codes, guidance-counselor contacts) to increase geographic distribution of applicants.

The commission also reviewed and approved the annual work plan and long-term directives, including scheduling adjustments; a roll-call vote passed the work plan with the Sept. 15 start time for the commission meeting set at 10:30 a.m.

What happens next: staff will work with the association to finalize conference structure and supervisor training requirements, update grant-eligibility guidance if the association shortens training, and pursue better scholarship outreach ahead of the next application cycle.
