School board approves Heartwood High name and hears CIP, land-acquisition and modular plans

The Stafford County School Board on Aug. 26 approved the name, mascot and colors for the new High School 6 and spent extensive time reviewing the FY27 capital improvement process, including the need to begin land-acquisition planning and to consider modulars and interim uses as construction and enrollment decisions move forward.

Naming vote: After public engagement and a committee recommendation, the board voted 6'to'1 to adopt Heartwood ("Hartwood" in the record) High School as the facility name, the Stallion as mascot and black, silver and gold as school colors. Miss Hollstead, who made the motion, said she had heard "a lot more" constituent support for the Stallion mascot when she followed up with Hartwood-area residents.

CIP calendar and strategy: Staff presented the FY27 CIP calendar, describing large capital projects and the 3R list of roof, roadway and restoration projects. Staff recommended shifting several elementary rebuilds by a year and bringing specific projects (including Mountain View critical systems and the North Stafford interior renovation) into clearer timelines. The board set September and October work sessions for modulars, the Hartwood site long-term plan and the location of Middle School 9 so staff can pursue land and siting options.

Land acquisition and timing: Multiple board members and staff urged early coordination with the county on land purchases, noting that private development and data-center permits can consume buildable land quickly. Staff said the county had set up a land-bank fund and joint land-acquisition work is underway; the board was asked for directional guidance on general siting for future middle and high schools so land searches can proceed.

Modulars and temporary swing space: Staff flagged modular classrooms as a possible tool for providing swing space during phased renovations so multi-year interior projects need not be stretched across many summers.

What the board decided: The board adopted the Heartwood High School name and mascot, accepted staff's CIP scheduling updates for further review and set follow-up work sessions (notably Sept. 9) to drill into modulars, Hartwood long-term plans and middle-school siting.
