The Nashoba Regional School Committee voted unanimously to approve a transportation coordinator job description aimed at centralizing coordination of student transportation for special education.
Rowan, the district's director of student services, told the committee the role will "coordinate all the aspects of the student services transportation including the in district and the out of district" and manage vendor contracts, route assessment, budgeting and family communications. She said the district "anticipate[s] the recommended salary range to be 72,500 to 78,000 depending on the person's background and experience." Rowan also said the new position will sit within the director of student services office and that she will oversee it day to day.
Committee members asked operational questions about hours and responsibilities. Amy asked whether the position is 10-month or year-round; Kirk Downing, the superintendent, and Rowan clarified the post is a 12-month, full-time position to allow summer work preparing for the school year. The committee also discussed whether the coordinator would set cost-saving strategy or execute it; presenters said school leaders will set fiscal strategy and the coordinator will implement and provide data and recommendations.
In introducing the motion, committee member Amy moved to approve the job description "as presented and discussed this evening." The motion was seconded and, after an amendment to incorporate the clarifications voiced at the meeting (including the 12-month clarification), passed by recorded voice vote with all members voting yes.
District staff framed the hire as a cost-saving measure. During discussion staff said bringing coordination in-house could reduce a contracted agency fee (cited as roughly $170,000) and that internalizing the position should yield an estimated net savings of about $90,000 in transportation coordination costs; presenters described those as district estimates used for budgeting. The committee also asked that the job posting explicitly state the 12-month appointment and clarify hours and benefits consistent with other central office support positions.
What's next: staffing steps and the final job posting will follow; budget documents already include an $80,000 placeholder for the position pending final salary placement and any benefit decisions.
