During the meeting's work session, the board received a facilitated governance workshop from Dr. Carter of CI aimed at onboarding new members and clarifying the board's purpose, roles and operating norms.
Dr. Carter told the board that any time new members join "you are a new board," and led short rotating group exercises focused on what the board exists to accomplish, the observable behaviors of a well-functioning board, and priority-setting for the next 18–20 months. He proposed 45-minute individual follow-up conversations with each board member and scheduled a return engagement for Feb. 17.
The session emphasized the partnership-style governance model between the board and the superintendent, described the board's role in setting priorities and directing the superintendent, and asked members to consider a short list of board-level priorities to pursue over the coming 18–20 months. Dr. Carter said he would synthesize the group's notes, test themes using an AI-assisted preliminary analysis, produce a draft and return with it for the board to refine.
Next steps: Dr. Carter will provide a draft synthesis of the workshop outcomes and coordinate 45-minute follow-up calls with each board member to develop a set of prioritized board goals for the coming months.
