Board approves Chromebook purchase, bus-routing system and revised bus conduct policy

The Baldwin County school board approved several procurement and policy items at its Feb. 19 meeting, including a major Chromebook purchase, a bus-routing and student-tracking system, a professional-development contract and an updated student-conduct policy for bus transportation.
On a motion approved by the board, the district will purchase Chromebooks from Ary Jones for a total of $4,376,000 to support its replacement cycle and digital-equity goals. Staff explained the contract includes local repair logistics: a local warehouse and repair run will handle devices, the battery-replacement schedule was shortened from four to three years to reduce costs, and the district will use a four-year rotation where spares from year four are used for replacements.
The board also approved a BusRight routing and safety-pass system for $489,600. Transportation staff said the system will assist with route design while staff remain the primary route designers; drivers will receive tablets and students will be issued swipe cards to log on and off buses. Staff said manual driver check-in would be available for students who forget swipe cards.
A five-day on-site coaching engagement with Solution Tree (PLC support) was approved for $37,500 to strengthen district PLCs at the elementary level; the board also approved a contract with Verizon Connect for vehicle maintenance and fleet tracking hardware (terms in agenda exhibit).
The board voted to approve a revised bus-transportation student-conduct policy; staff said the policy would be posted to parents after the board vote and implemented immediately upon approval.
Budget and finance context: the district reported an ending fund balance of $101 million (about 2.65 months of reserves) and staff noted year-to-date expenditures were slightly above target due to a large textbook purchase and an employee incentive program.
What's next: staff will implement the vendor contracts and begin Chromebook deployment under the replacement cycle; transportation staff will roll out tablets and swipe cards and provide further details on training, missing-card protocols and stop-level adjustments requested by board members.
