Budget Advisory Board urges focus on affordability, fees and cautious AI pilots in Fort Lauderdale budget planning

At a joint workshop, members of Fort Lauderdale’s Budget Advisory Board summarized the board’s FY2027 review and urged the City Commission to prioritize affordability and long‑term fiscal strategies.
Bill Brown, chairman of the Budget Advisory Board, said the board conducted deep dives on revenue trends and major cost pressures and proposed that the city consider affordability when setting fees and charges. Brown told the commission the BAB had recommended increases to special‑event fees and sponsorship structures that could improve cost recovery for Parks and Recreation and other departments.
Board members also recommended exploring targeted applications of artificial intelligence to streamline services such as permitting. "Maximize use of technology such as AI to optimize service delivery and efficiency," a BAB member said, adding that pilots should be limited and implemented strategically to avoid abrupt workforce impacts.
The BAB recommended avoiding short‑term budget fixes that increase long‑term costs and said it will provide a draft executive summary and recommendations for the City Commission to review. The board said it meets again in May with department heads and plans a fuller presentation at a June meeting, when property appraiser numbers and additional fiscal data are expected to be available.
The Commission thanked the BAB for its work and signaled it will consider the board’s feedback during budget development and as the City Hall interim agreement and other large projects move forward.
