City debuts Hyperion purification pilot as first step in Pure Water LA program

Los Angeles officials on April 14 cut the ribbon on an advanced water-purification pilot at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, calling the demonstration a first step toward the city's long-term Pure Water Los Angeles program.
The pilot, described by the presenter at the event, will produce about 1.5 million gallons per day of recycled water that the city intends to route for nonpotable uses at Los Angeles International Airport and for use at Hyperion, while testing technology and operations for larger reuse efforts. "This project will produce 1.5 million gallons per day of recycled water for reuse at LAX airport and also here at Hyperion," the presenter said at the ceremony.
City officials framed the pilot as a proof-of-concept for a multi-decade initiative that aims to expand advanced treatment and recycled-water delivery across Los Angeles. At the event the presenter said the broader Pure Water LA program could involve up to $6 billion in investments and ultimately produce more than 200 million gallons per day of advanced-treated recycled water to recharge groundwater basins and, in time, support direct potable reuse.
Officials at the plant also outlined how Hyperion's existing treatment processes fit into that plan: incoming sewage is screened to remove debris, goes through biological treatment where microorganisms consume dissolved organics, and solids are routed to digesters that generate methane. The plant recovers energy from that methane to power operations, a feature officials said helps the facility lower net energy needs and support renewable-energy goals.
The pilot will send treated water to LAX for uses such as restrooms, city staff said, and serve as a testbed for regulatory, operational and community-outreach work needed before larger-scale expansion. The presenter emphasized that recycled water for drinking is not yet available citywide: "Recycled water for drinking is not currently available in the City of Los Angeles. Although projects are in construction to change that," they said.
Officials said the pilot is intended to demonstrate technology, build public confidence and inform next steps, including groundwater recharge and possible eventual direct potable reuse, subject to regulatory approval and further capital investment.
The ceremony also highlighted related community and environmental benefits: stormwater capture, expanded public-space irrigation, shaded tree plantings and improved urban cooling, and the organizers noted the project ties to a larger effort to reimagine the LA waterfront and urban green infrastructure.
City staff did not provide a timetable for when larger-scale Pure Water LA elements would come online beyond the pilot, nor did they give a precise schedule for when direct potable reuse might be available. The presenter said the pilot is a demonstration to help the city meet its long-term water-supply resilience goals.
What happens next: city staff will operate and evaluate the pilot, report findings publicly as required by regulators, and continue planning for phased expansion of Pure Water LA.
