Elbert County treasurer corrects printing error that overstated bond mill levy on mailed tax notices

Sher Hulet, Elbert County treasurer and public trustee, told the board on Feb. 11 that a printing‑company formatting change caused the overlay and bond district mill levies to be combined on some mailed property‑tax notices for an Independence district.
"The printing company that we used changed some formatting which resulted in the overlay district and the bond district's mill levies to be added together for one total for the bond," Hulet said. The error caused one line on some mailed notices to appear as 85.2820 mills; Hulet said the correct split should have shown the independence overlay at about 16.86800 mills and the bond at about 68.41400 mills.
Hulet said the treasurer’s office data and county‑printed notices are correct and that staff sent an explanatory letter and emailed corrected notices to affected taxpayers. "The tax amounts that appear on your notice are correct. The data within the treasurer's office is correct as well," she said, adding that residents may print corrected statements from the county website or request an emailed copy.
Hulet apologized for the confusion, called the issue a printing error and said it did not affect other Elbert County taxpayers. She provided a county contact number for questions and said staff will double‑check future mailings to prevent recurrence.
The board acknowledged the correction and thanked the treasurer and staff for identifying and resolving the issue.
