San Marcos Mayor Jane Houston formally proclaimed Jan. 19, 2026, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and called on residents to take part in local observances honoring the civil rights leader.
Reading from a prepared proclamation, Mayor Jane Houston said the holiday ‘‘encourages all Americans to fulfill Martin Luther King’s vision of freedom, equality, and opportunity for all people’’ and declared Jan. 19, 2026, as the official day of observance for the city. The proclamation noted that local, state and national organizations would remember Dr. King and referenced the 2026 holiday theme, ‘‘Mission Possible: building community, uniting a nation the nonviolent way.’’
The Dumbar Heritage Association, which the speaker identified by name, said it is marking its 24th year hosting the city’s MLK celebration and provided logistical details for the public. A representative for the association said the celebration will begin Jan. 17 with the MLK kids program from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Public Library. On Monday, Jan. 19, events include a wreath-laying at the LBJ MLK crossroads at 9:30 a.m., the 24th annual MLK walk, a program at the Hayes County Courthouse and a reception at the Paul Lawrence Dunar Recreation Center.
The association representative encouraged groups to register for the walk and urged individuals to sign up for the kids program; registration deadlines were described as approaching. "We invite everyone to come out and participate," the presenter said, and directed listeners to the association website, dhasmtx.com, for more information and the MLK2026 registration tab.
The proclamation and the association’s event schedule were presented to the assembled attendees with brief remarks from the mayor followed by applause. The mayor thanked organizers for the prepared proclamation and urged residents to observe the holiday and local events.
The events are scheduled to run Jan. 17–19, 2026; the association’s website lists registration details and contact information for volunteers and participants.
