Board members who spoke during the meeting emphasized community input and the criteria developed by residents and staff. Dr. Trong welcomed Dr. Smith and said the candidate "centers on the students" and brings a promise of belonging and opportunity. Dr. Perez said Dr. Smith demonstrated "authenticity, cultural humility, deep listening" and an equity-driven approach that aligns with the district's priorities. Dr. Potter credited the community panels and said the selection process was rigorous; Director Kasen thanked staff and the search team for guiding the process. Vice Chair Raji described the process as "rigorous and clear," and Dr. Carpenter said the candidate combined "head and heart." All speakers said they looked forward to working with Dr. Smith.
Dr. Smith, who the board noted brings experience from work in Denver, thanked the board and his family and said he was "so excited" to meet students, teachers and staff and to "listen, to learn, and to grow together." He added that he was "so appreciative and so thankful for the opportunity" and ready to begin the work.
Chair Gar closed the meeting at 6:32 p.m. The board recorded the appointment and approved the contract as presented. The district did not read a roll-call vote with member names during the meeting; all seven board members were present and the board's vocal and hand-raise indication of support was recorded as unanimous on the motion.
