Nags Head breaks ground on combined wellness center and seasonal staff housing

The Nags Head Board of Commissioners and staff celebrated the groundbreaking for a new combined wellness center and employee housing project on Sept. 3, a key element of the town hall campus master plan.
Mayor Ben Cahoun and town staff said the previous wellness building had been closed due to mold and moisture, and the new combined facility replaces that space while adding seasonal housing to help recruit and retain staff. Town managers said one duplex on the campus is nearing completion (expected to house up to 16 ocean-rescue staff) and the new combined facility is intended to house roughly that many more seasonal employees. "We have about 120 employees," the mayor said, noting the wellness center's role in training, fitness and retention.
Staff said construction bids were "surprisingly well within our budget," that the project is moving to final financing and construction is expected to begin in September. The board recognized the project design and construction team, including Oakley Collier Architects (Frank B. Joiner) and contractor AR Chesson (Al Chesson), and consultants who will support construction oversight and systems design.
No major opposition or alternative designs were presented at the meeting. Town staff indicated further procurement of equipment and fit-out will be managed by departments who will use the facility.
