The Nags Head Board of Commissioners on Sept. 3 adopted three proclamations and heard public praise for a town employee.
Septic Smart Week: Planning staff highlighted the town's septic health program, which offers free inspections, a $250 water-bill credit for septic tank pumpouts and a low-interest loan option for needed repairs. Staff said nearly 85% of homes and many businesses in town rely on septic systems; the board proclaimed Sept. 15'19, 2025 as Septic Smart Week to promote maintenance and groundwater protection.
Diaper Need Awareness Week: The board proclaimed Sept. 15'21, 2025 as Diaper Need Awareness Week, citing a National Diaper Bank Network finding that one in two families experience diaper need and noting local partners, including the Children and Youth Partnership for Dare County, that distribute diapers.
National Night Out: Chief Perry Hail previewed the town's National Night Out event (Oct. 7) at Dowy Park and encouraged participation, highlighting community-police engagement and family activities.
Public comment: Volunteer Mary Kelly commended event coordinator Paige Griffin for organizing the farmers market and Dowy Park events. Another resident, Hillilary McCubbins, urged the town to consider concrete medians on sections of the bypass to improve pedestrian safety and reduce center-lane stopping.
The proclamations were adopted by motion and voice vote during the meeting.
