Veterans service officer reports increased benefit payments and outreach plans

At the March 3 meeting Jay, the county veteran service officer, reported on claims and benefit‑payment activity for February and year-to-date.
Jay said the office had 127 open claims, including 53 pending VA action and 51 completed year-to-date. He reported that $9,956 was the total increase in monthly compensation for veterans for the month of February (as described in his briefing). He also reported $72,535 in retroactive payments for February and $177,468 in retroactive payments year-to-date. "...for the month of February. It's an increase on their monthly compensation for veterans that have filed," he said while clarifying the $9,956 figure.
The office reported three veteran transports in February and two planned for March; staffing includes four drivers with one recent retirement and one application pending with the VA. Jay said the office is planning outreach events including an informational briefing in April and participation in a March 24 pre‑retirement seminar at the Watertown Readiness Center and a March 24 outreach at the Watertown Armory focused on burial benefits, eligibility, caregiver support and nursing-home care.
Jay asked the commission whether there were any questions; commissioners did not request additional action at the meeting.
