Graham County announced Tuesday that it has secured a $1.2 million congressional directed spending award to help extend reclaimed-water distribution at the county fairgrounds, County Manager Welker told supervisors.
"We received a congressional directed spending award for $1.2 million to help with that project," Welker said, crediting Representative Juan Ciscomani for assistance in securing the allocation. He described the funding as intended to help move reclaimed water throughout the county's 100-plus-acre park and said the grant will flow through EPA channels.
Welker said staff do not yet know the precise amount that will be available as a grant or what level of environmental review will be required. He said the county was told there is a possibility the project could qualify for a categorical exclusion ("CATEX"), which would reduce the scope of environmental review; staff expect to know more when the EPA program opens in mid- to late-March.
County engineers are integrating the projected funding into waterline design and coordination with partner agencies; Welker said the county is already working with the EPA and that engineers are finalizing plans. Next steps include preparing an EPA grant application and determining environmental requirements before implementation.
