Veterans group urges Yorktown board to re-examine school-tax exemption calculations
Summary
Major Mike Sheridan, representing the Veterans Advisory Committee, asked the board to reconsider how veterans' exemptions are calculated for school taxes, citing counts of 223 households with the basic exemption, 147 with combat-zone exemption and 91 with disability-related exemptions, and offered the committee's assistance to review the calculations.

Major Mike Sheridan, U.S. Army (ret.), told the Yorktown school board March 2 that the Veterans Advisory Committee would like the district to re-examine how local veterans' tax exemptions are applied to the school tax levy.
Sheridan outlined the committee's concerns about the current calculation method and the distribution of relief compared with town and county property-tax calculations. He provided counts from the assessor's records: 223 households hold the basic veterans exemption; 147 of those also have the combat-zone exemption; and 91 households qualify for the disability-based exemption. "We would ask you to reconsider it," he said, offering the veterans committee's help to meet with the district to provide more detail.
Sheridan said that applying the same percentages used by the town assessor yields greater relief on town and county tax bills than on the school tax under the current school-district method, and he asked the board to allow the committee to review the calculation steps and data with staff.
The board did not take action during the meeting; Sheridan's request was entered as public comment and trustees invited further follow-up as appropriate.
