Policy committee forwards wellness policy to first reading after routine triannual review

The Upper Adams School District policy committee voted by consensus to advance Policy 246, the district wellness policy, to its first reading after a required triannual review.
Mr. Lustig opened the discussion by saying federal regulations require schools in the National School Lunch Program to review wellness policies every three years and noted it had been three years since the district’s last review. Dr. Chong told the committee that the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) suggested no substantive revisions and described the district’s wellness committee work, which includes student input on nutrition education and physical activity, cafeteria audits conducted with Chartwells, and coordination with school staff.
Mrs. Hobbs and other committee members confirmed the policy’s components are being implemented in practice and had been reviewed with student representatives. When asked whether any additional implementation steps were required given that the committee was not changing the policy’s wording, administrators confirmed none were necessary. Members agreed the policy should move to first read.
The committee’s action advances the district’s compliance with federal timing for wellness-policy reviews; the next procedural step is a formal first reading at an upcoming public meeting.
