School building committee approves plaque design after members debate including elected officials’ names

The Town of Cheshire School Building Committee voted 4–3 to approve design option 4 for the dedication plaque for the new school, adopting a modification to include a dormer element similar to option 2.

The committee reviewed four mockups from the design firm Tecton that varied the placement of an historic photograph and whether to list the names of town council and board of education members. Chuck said elected officials’ names “don’t belong anywhere on there” and warned that listing current officeholders risks omitting past contributors; others favored including a broader set of names that recognizes those who helped move the modernization effort to referendum. Sean and Jeff Solen circulated the mockups to some council and board members before the meeting and relayed small edits and a request to elevate chair and vice-chair names on the list.

After discussion, a member moved to approve option 4 with the dormer modification; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote, 4 in favor and 3 opposed. Committee staff said they will request final mockups from Tecton, circulate a proof to confirm name spellings and minor edits, and invite the Norton family to the dedication when the photo is finalized.

The decision resolves the committee’s prior direction to the design working group to remove mistaken attributions near the historic photograph and to produce a version that either lists the council and board names or only the school building committee. The plaque will also include a line recognizing the “tremendous support and involvement of the school modernization committee and the many residents and organizations” who supported construction, per the draft language shown to the committee.

The committee discussed logistics for the dedication and agreed staff will circulate the final art once Tecton completes the edits; the plaque will not return as a formal agenda item unless substantive changes arise.
