Building services reports $12.5M in summer maintenance; Mountain View and ACE Academy projects advance

Matt Worman, director of building services, gave the board a detailed accounting of summer projects and ongoing construction, saying the office completed $12.5 million of CIP maintenance work across the division in the shortened summer window and an additional $8.2 million tied to two new schools.

Worman highlighted completed bathroom renovations at Murray and Stony Point, a replaced Monticello High track, window upgrades at Albemarle High and a storm‑water retention project at Mountain View Elementary. He said crews responded to an early‑September transformer failure at Albemarle High, securing a large generator and restoring power to 30 classrooms the same day.

On construction, Worman showed progress photos from Mountain View Upper Elementary (site work, poured slab, drill rigs for geothermal wells) and ACE Academy Lambs Lane (steel erection, waterproofing for the division data center). He estimated the new ACE facility would enroll about 640 students next year and reach full studio capacity (800) the following year.

Tiffany Morris, assistant director for custodial services, summarized custodial achievements including an in‑house gym‑refinishing program, a custodial career ladder available to 140 custodial employees, and improved floor‑refinishing capacity. She said the custodial team completed about 1,300 work orders this summer and maintains an average work‑order resolution time of about 40 days.

Board members asked technical and funding questions about site stabilization, recycling program training for multilingual staff and the phasing of capital funds. Worman explained that some renovation funding is staged over multiple years and that additions could affect the timing of other maintenance projects; trustees asked staff to clarify funding tradeoffs when the long‑range planning advisory committee report is prepared.
