Division reports small enrollment dip and stable mean class sizes in September report

Roslin Schmidt, the division’s chief operating officer, told the board the September 30 enrollment snapshot showed a small net decline of roughly 89 students across Albemarle County Public Schools, with elementary enrollment down slightly (pre-K included), middle schools up by about 50 students, and high schools down by roughly 70.
Schmidt said mean class sizes at the division level have remained the same or slightly smaller than last year, attributing the stability to staffing decisions and lower-than-expected enrollment in some schools. She noted kindergarten projections use live-birth data from five years prior and that the division will present a 10-year enrollment projection at an upcoming work session.
School-level variation was substantial, Schmidt said, and detailed tables in the meeting materials list enrollments and class-size figures by school and grade. The board asked for further breakout by school and for more granular reasons driving shifts at specific schools where enrollment moved significantly.
The board did not take action on the report; it was provided for oversight and to inform upcoming long-range planning work.
