The Grand Rapids City Commission on Sept. 9 approved a resolution to increase pay and benefits for non‑represented city employees and adopted two related salary ordinances for non‑represented and appointed officials.
Commissioner Purdue, who explained the proposal to the commission, said the adjustment was intended to align non‑represented employee compensation with previously negotiated agreements. "The three‑year step increase of five, four and 4%" was noted in the agenda packet as the recommended schedule, Purdue said. The commission voted unanimously to suspend the rules and pass the measures; roll calls recorded "yes" votes from the seated commissioners and the mayor.
City staff and commissioners framed the adjustment as a response to inflationary pressure on wages and a step to preserve employees' purchasing power. One commissioner noted the local officers compensation committee had authority over elected‑official pay and that the commission's action affects administrative pay scales rather than negotiated contracts.
The ordinances were adopted with motions for immediate effect. A clerk's roll call recorded recorded yes votes from the commission members present.
The measures take effect immediately as approved. The commission also included the pay changes in materials that staff said are comparable to recently negotiated employee agreements; additional implementation details are in the agenda packet.
What happens next: the ordinances are in force and staff will proceed with administrative steps to implement the pay schedule. No amendments to the adopted ordinances were proposed at the meeting.
